During the early years of the Institute of American Indian Arts, the students were encouraged to ‘step outside the box’ in creating their art. They were inspired by European and American artists in abstraction and geometric shapes. Combined with their own traditions and culture, these students created work with some very unique qualities. The instructors at the time were also artists who went on to become icons for the Institute like Charles Loloma, Otellie Loloma and Allan Houser.

IAIA Museum is proud to present this exceptional installation of pieces from the permanent collection. Dating from 1964 through 1969, the work is three dimensional, and is primarily composed of mixed metals, wood, commercial clay and stone. Although many talented artists who attended IAIA in the early years are recognized for paintings, prints and drawings, the unique qualities of these three dimensional pieces needed a voice—and a stage.
